Saint Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart Integrate Cardiovascular Services

January 31 2012

Saint Elizabeth announced Nebraska Heart and Saint Elizabeth are integrating cardiovascular open-heart surgery in one location to eliminate duplication of services. Effective immediately, open-heart surgery will be performed at Nebraska Heart Hospital.

Last August, Nebraska Heart Institute and Heart Hospital became part of Catholic Health Initiatives. With the two organizations coming together, they can offer a complete breadth of health care services unmatched in the region and both hospitals can be more effective and efficient in serving cardiac patients.

Saint Elizabeth will continue to provide high-quality cardiovascular services including heart catheterizations, inserting stents to open blocked arteries, managing abnormal heart beats and implanting pacemakers and defibrillators. They will also continue to maintain the high-quality of emergency cardiac care in their Emergency Department, which has been ranked high nationally in door-to-balloon time studies. Saint Elizabeth will not eliminate any positions; current staff will support other surgical procedures.

Nebraska Heart is ranked in the top two percent of hospitals nationally for cardiac surgery according to HealthGrades. Nebraska Heart Hospital is well-positioned to accept the open-heart surgeries previously done at Saint Elizabeth, and, as of February 1, Nebraska Heart will occupy clinic space on the lobby level adjacent to the Saint Elizabeth cardiovascular department.
