Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute Awarded Commission on Cancer Accreditation for 30 consecutive years

March 02 2011

The Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute has earned the Commission on Cancer accreditation for 30 consecutive years. The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer award is designed to recognize cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.

Accredited facilities must undergo a stringent certification process that ensures each cancer program is compliant with 36 standards measuring quality and comprehensive cancer care. The requirements cover everything from a multidisciplinary approach to care, state-of-the-art diagnostics, comprehensive support services and cancer registry management. One in four cancer programs across the United States achieve this accreditation.

Receiving cancer care at a Commission on Cancer accredited cancer program hospital or facility ensures that patients will receive:

  • Comprehensive care including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options
  • Information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options
  • Access to prevention and early detection programs, cancer education, and support services
  • A cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up

“The Commission on Cancer Accreditation reaffirms that we are providing the highest-quality cancer care for our patients”, says Mary Trauernicht, RN, director of oncology at the Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute. “We are honored to receive this special designation for 30 years in a row.”

The mission for the Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute is to support patients physically, emotionally, and spiritually throughout their entire journey.
