Taking Care of Mom

Our commitment to caring for the whole person encompasses many aspects of health, but it is centered on a strong foundation of caring for your physical wellbeing. As part of CHI Health, St. Elizabeth brings expectant mothers respected and accomplished health professionals in the field of maternal fetal medicine—giving you access to specialized care needed for a healthy pregnancy and the best start possible for your baby.

The maternal fetal medicine specialists at St. Elizabeth are available for diagnostic testing and consultation for high-risk pregnancies. They consult with your OB/GYN and other specialists such as cardiologists, pulmonologists, and endocrinologists to co-manage your care. This coordination is provided during every stage of fetal development through birth and post-delivery treatment.

Why might I need a maternal fetal medicine specialist?

Maternal fetal medicine is centered on caring for mothers with high-risk pregnancies. High-risk pregnancies are usually the result of factors in one of three categories:

  • Existing health conditions. Women who have a condition before becoming pregnant usually know from the start that they may need special attention throughout their pregnancy.
  • Health conditions developed during pregnancy. These conditions may include high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • Risk factors that are pregnancy-specific. Multiple babies, a mother’s age, or premature labor are factors to consider.
